Google Expands Gemini Nano AI and Enhances Pixel Features in Latest Update

Google has announced a significant update to its Pixel devices, including phones, tablets, and smartwatches, with new features set to enhance user experience. The update, part of Google’s June Pixel feature drop, will start rolling out today.

A key highlight is the expansion of the Gemini Nano generative AI model, previously exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, which will now be available on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a. Initially, this feature will be accessible as a developer option, allowing for broader testing and optimization.

The update also brings enhancements to the Recorder app, now offering more detailed AI-powered summaries for recordings on Pixel 8 models. The app will feature speaker labels for devices from Pixel 6 onward and provides options to export transcripts to text files or Google Docs.

Connectivity features see an upgrade as well; Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro users will be able to connect their devices to an external display via USB-C, enhancing the viewing experience for videos and photos.

Photography on Pixel devices gets a boost with new capabilities, such as choosing which lens to use on the Pixel Fold and sixth-gen and later Pro models. Additionally, Pixel 6 and newer models will support reverse phone number lookup from the call log and automatic identification of the best photo moments in HDR+.

For wearable technology, the Pixel Watch will now include car crash detection on its second-gen model, enhancing safety by notifying emergency services if the wearer is unresponsive after a detected accident. Fall detection improvements and PayPal access via Google Wallet are also added to both generations of the Pixel Watch.

Google Home App integration on Wear OS 3 devices is streamlined to allow easier control of smart home devices directly from the watch face, and a new Google Home Favorites widget will be available on Android 12 and later devices, albeit in public preview.

Lastly, the Pixel Tablet in hub mode will now receive enhanced notifications from Nest doorbells, allowing users to interact directly through two-way talk or send quick responses.

Google’s latest update introduces a suite of enhancements across its hardware range, aiming to improve functionality and integration between devices. As these features roll out, Pixel users can look forward to a more connected and streamlined digital experience.
